Hi everyone,

I moved to Catalonia in November 2021.

Now living in Begur.

Unfortunately I don’t speak Spanish and am struggling to get a Spanish health card.

I have an NIE, am on the pardon at the local commune and in receipt of a uk state pension.

I am awaiting an S1 certificate from the uk but have received conflicting information about what else I need to provide to get a Spanish health card.

A local accountant tells me I have to be a resident for a minimum of 2 years before I am eligible, and a lawyer tells me I have to become a fiscal resident and pay Spanish taxes before being eligible.

Can anyone shine a light on any of this and provide some guidance, or know someone I could contact who can solve this problem?

Hi there,

You definitely need to be a Spanish resident and have a TIE card. Once you have that and your completed S1 you COULD apply for a tajeta de salud. However, since Brexit and the deadline to get residence the rules may have changed. I suggest you contact CAB SPAIN online. They will have the latest information and are extremely helpful.

Good luck!

Denise
