Hi, we are thinking about buying a holiday appartment in Tossa de Mar. Is there anything we should be aware of? We are particularly wondering about squatters as this seems to be an issue in Spain. But any other advice/ information would be welcome. Also are there many Brits with homes/holiday homes in the area

Are we generally welcomed by the locals?

We're from Canada and have had a holiday home here in Spain for 8 years.  Our home is in the Serra Brava community of Lloret de Mar.

To your main question of squatters - they normally go after single family homes that are somewhat remote, I really doubt you'd have issue with an apartment  as they'd not have access to the front entrance and they'd be in plain sight of neighbors.  We use security cameras on our single family home and have had zero issues.  You could do the same.

People wise everyone is SO FRIENDLY!  They are very welcoming, we just love it.

Tossa is a beautiful place but be aware that if you have a car parking can be a nightmare during the summer so if you buy a place there I'd be sure that it.comes.with a parking spot, I wouldn't even consider an apartment without one.

I hope that helps!

Dave

Hi,

My husband and I are looking to buy an apartment in Tossa de Mar and are thinking about living there part of the year and the other part in our hometown, Dallas, USA.  Our concern is the medical care and especially the insurance portion.  Do we have to buy an insurance policy from Spain?

Our other question is finding a good real estate agent’ any recommendations?

Thank you

We've had a holiday home in Spain for 8 years, our current one is in Lloret de Mar, which is about 20 min down the coast from Tossa de Mar.  You can come to Spain for up to 90 days without a special Visa and do not have to get health insurance.  Having said that I wouldn't travel anywhere without some kind of insurance coverage.  If you have coverage in the USA maybe see if you have travel insurance coverage or if you can get it.  You can also get travel insurance from many providers if you search the internet.

The real estate agent that we used for both of the homes we've bought here was just fantastic.  His name is Fernando Aguilar and his business is Find My Dream House at https://www.findmydream.house/.  His email is [email protected].  He speaks excellent English and is a great guy, very honest and trustworthy.

Also, if you're looking in Tossa and intend to have a car, I'd be absolutely sure to only consider a place that includes a parking spot as the parking in Tossa is absolutely horrendous during the summer months.

I hope that helps!

Dave

Hi SJS,
Just to confirm you will make a great choice with Tossa, we are a retired English couple and have had our apartment for ten years now. We looked all over Europe for somewhere with a rugged coastline, near mountains (relatively) driveable from U.K., and choice of airports

We visit every year for around three months overall and our family love it too.

Not heard of any issues with ‘okupas’ squatters (I think they’re called that?) and locals are all friendly and supportive.

We used ‘finques soms’ as our agents and can’t recommend them highly enough, they sorted everything for us.

In our experience, there’s not that many brits, however, that’s part of the attraction. Mostly Catalan and French. The brits that are there are very friendly.

Let us know if you need any other help.

All the best with your search
