Travel in Costa Brava

Hi All, My family and I will be travelling in Costa Brava only for four days. On the day we have to be at the Barcelona airport for a 11:40 am flight, are we better to spend the night before in a hotel close to the airport? Would Tossa de Mar be close enough to be at the Barcelona airport by 9 am? We would be driving a rent a car we would have to turn in at the airport. We normally fly into Madrid so I am not familiar with the Barcelona airport traffic. Thank you in advance for any opinions.

Traffic around Barcelona in the morning can be horrendous, total gridlock at times. I ALWAYS stay in Barcelona the night before an early flight.
