New to this very handy forum.

I am supposed to be coming to Pals in August but have no idea if it will be relatively safe to do so.  Also if we do need medical assistance is there a really good hospital nearby, especially worried about the language barrier.  Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Chrissyb,

At this stage, international travel in August is by no means certain and the Spanish Government is being quite cautious about allowing foreigners into the country only to find that that increases the rate of infection. On the other hand, the tourist business is massively important to the Spanish economy, so they really want to open up for tourists asap. Yesterday, the Spanish Prime Minister stated that overseas tourism should start 'from July'. As for the UK government, they appear still to be undecided and are still talking about 14 day self-isolation for anyone coming into the UK from abroad. If they insist on this, many people may decide to holiday in the UK or Ireland.

The incidence of Covid-19 in Pals (as at May 18th) is quite low, at just 7 cases in total. (https://www.elmundo.es/ciencia-y-salud/salud/2020/05/18/5ec26bc2fc6c83bf178b4612.html) This is just under 0.3% of the population so 99.7% of the village hasn't been diagnosed with it. (The outcome of the seven cases isn't reported.)

This is certainly relatively safe and you may well be safer here than staying at home, especially if you live in a large town or city. Obviously, it makes sense to continue to observe the social distancing and hand cleansing rules, but these apply wherever you are. Masks are now obligatory here everywhere that you can't guarantee to keep the social distancing rules.

As for really good hospitals, Girona university hospital is probably as good as, say, the Royal Berkshire in Reading. You would have to go to Barcelona to find hospitals of the calibre of Barts or the Royal Free in London.

Hope this helps.
