Hi,

I've returned from a recent trip to the Costa Brava during which I was visiting property with the intention to buy something small that my wife and I could use for part of the year. Tossa was the nicest place I visited, but my budget doesn't stretch to something in the town with a view of the sea.

I did see a 2 bed in the Cala Salions Urbanization about 10km up the coast, and I am thinking of making an offer on it. I didn't think I'd like an urbanization that was out of town, but when I was there (early April) it was nice and quiet, which I liked, and the drive in and out of town doesn't bother me (its actually a really pleasant drive given the views over the sea).

Cala Salions is probably overdeveloped and the least appealing of the urbanisations along the coast (as reflected in the prices), but we're really just looking for a base. We plan to be there in low season, and if its practical (and legal) rent it out for a month at a time in July and August (that's isn't a requirement for us however).

Are there any compelling reasons not to buy in that particular urbanization, or in urbanizations in general in that area? I know that it will be deserted in winter and that shop/restaurant will be closed, but that doesn't really bother me. I like having places to myself!

I looked in lots of places along the coast,  before we bought in Sant Feliu de Guixols. Cala Salions is pretty, but I did not want to buy there as mostly everything is closed there when the summer season is over. Also there is no  nice size supermarket in there. I believe you have to drive to Lloret de Mar or Tossa. Same thing with a pharmacy and other stores you will need to install yourself in your new property. Delivery of furniture, and if you remodel delivery of construction material will cost you more too. If you need a plumber, an electrician, etc, that service will also cost you extra due to your location if you buy in Cala Salionc.  I do not remember seeing a nice variety or number of restaurants in Cala Sallionc either, for the days when you do not want to cook. I would advise you ask the seller if they have a tourist license to rent during the summer. Some communities have restrictions on the number of short term/summer rentals.

We are very happy where we are as it is a year round town, has hospital/ clinics (for an emergency) , banks, restaurants, various supermarkets, doctor / dentist offices, bakeries, other stores, gas stations, we can walk to the beach and to a small supermarket from our apartment, we have Mercadona, Aldi, and Lidl 6-8 min away in car,  and we have a very nice view of the Sant Pol beach.

Good luck with your purchase.

Hi Paty, thanks so much for your response. I guess the price reflects everything you have mentioned. I actually don't mind that its quiet during the off season. I live in a very rural location and I am used to privacy. I think perhaps that if I bought somewhere that was busier I might find it difficult to get used to that. When I was there in early April there were just a few people around, and I thought it was quite idyllic having the place to myself. I also work remotely, so somewhere quieter might suit that better.

The place I am looking at is in good repair and is being sold with nice furniture. The agent also told me that there is a builder/handyman firm who basically does nothing else that deal with Salions clients, and I have plenty of my own DIY experience.

I guess my original query was to surface any red flags that you might have heard about e.g. that's it run by the Russian mob, or about to be demolished because its unsafe, or something crazy like that.

Thanks again.
