Hi, until today we used telsat dish and box (Phoenix HD mini) in our house in Cabanyes. This has not worked since we arrived last week (we got channel names but "no signal" message) , and we finally got round to going into the shop in Platja, only to be told the relevant satellite has a potentially terminal problem.

Does anyone have a suggestion of an alternative solution, which hopefully does not require annual subscriptions as we don't really watch enough to be worth paying for.

Many thanks

Hi Rick, we recently signed up with an IPTV company based in the UK. We are very happy with them and what the have to offer. We ditched the company we’d been using for years due to non existent customer support. This new company has excellent support and is half the price. There is no fixed contract and you can pay monthly. If you want further information get back to me.

Hi

As we only spend 2-3 months a year in Cataluña getting UK TV has always been a challenge.

My answer is a dedicated server running PLEX in the UK which has a TV tuner card to provide recorded  and live TV from Freeview

I buy a data sim from a spanish company which  I pick up on arrival from Oficina Correos , put it into a 4g router and using things like remote wakeup of server, stream from house in UK to TV here - a bit techie but works well - no VPN  stuff, no permanent spanish contract .

More details on request if it seems relevant to your situation

Mike

Hi Denise, thanks for getting back. which IPTV company is it? Does this mean you don't need a VPN? Does it get mainline UK channels?

We have broadband and can get Netfilx OK. For some reason we can log onto Amazon Prime, but everything says "not available here". Somewhere said there is a button which shows what is available in Spain, but not too surprisingly it doesn't appear on our screen.

many thanks

Hi Mike, we do have broadband in Spain, which presumably removes the 4g SIM requirement. The PLEX bit does sound quite technical. by server do you mean any old laptop with your freeview feed plugged into it, or does it need to be quite a high spec box.

We only have Virgin TV and wireless TV in the UK. Would it work with them?

Many thanks

Rick

Hi Rick,

The company I use has more channels than you could ever imagine! No, you don’t need a VPN, just need to buy a box (Amazon). Email me for more information on

Rick

Server is a alternative name for a PC that can be a accesed by users for data retrieval - a laptop would do that. I haven't worked with cable but Google tells me that there are usb- cable adapters to connect pc to cable tv.

Plex is free s/w unless you want to download programs and watch without Internet connection.

If you are only interested in streaming from your UK pc to spain then nothing to pay Plex.

Streaming live TV SD (standard definition picture) works with broadband speed of 2Mbps and up - you would need a speed like this both in UK and Spain.

I've not looked at what's involved in setting up Plex with cable but it's common in USA where Plex is developed.

One other consideration is the remote control of UK device.

My PC - only used for Plex for security reasons  - can be turned on from Spain for use in Spain but when the PC is not being used it has a sleep timer ( like all Windows PCs) and so it goes into standby mode until we wake it up with an app on our phones.

In the back of my Spanish TV is a thing like Firestick that runs the Plex app at this end - a lot of smart TVs have the option of loading the Plex app into the TV just like other streaming apps - BBC Iplayer, Netflix, Prime etc so no separate device .

If you are planning a long term semi residency in Spain maybe this type of solution is worth the effort - it's yours and you have control - no VPN  and not breaking any "laws" because you are just watching the stuff you would watch at home over " a very long cable" .
