Hi, I’m new to the forum and am interested in the Girona area. Can you please advise what the weather in summer and winter is generally like here? Are there any areas to avoid with regards to living there please? Thank you, Angela

Well Angela, I have lived in and around Gerona for 26 years. Before global warming took a hold the highest temperatures were around 36 degrees in July and the lowest minus 8. For the last four years we have seen 42 in April and again in June but the winters have been mild, I have not seen zero for a few years now. If like me you are a true Brit I recommend you invest in an air condition unit there are some now with a small compressor which makes them cheaper to run. If you have a garden you will find that flowers and vegetables will not pollinate as the flower buds dry up as they are formed. The hottest temperatures are mid afternoon, around 3 and 4 p.m. Now you will see why the shops are all shut during these hours and the natives are asleep. Does this help?

Hi Micky, thank you for replying.  Yes this is very helpful. I guessed it would be quite hot being inland and agree air con is a must! I’ve lived in Denia and found the summers bearable enough so have also been looking at Palafrugell as an alternative maybe, although Girona does look beautiful. Do you have any insight into Palafrugell and what it is like to live all year round please also if there is a community feel there? Many thanks, Angela

Hi Angela I am not too good with Catalan so I will refer to the town you said as "P". It is not a beach the beach is ride away about 6 kilometres if my memory serves me right. There is not much at "P" you can walk around it is about 10 minutes. If it is beach you want I would recommend L'Escala, I had an apartment there for about 12 years and it is open all year. Only the transport service is non existent, winter only one bus a day and the train is miles away.

If you plan to live permanently in Catalonia you are better in Gerona, good health service for us Brits as NHS England has to pay Spain for all our medical treatment and medication. My Spanish friends used to say I got better treatment than they did, I am 80 now and my friends are all dead.

From Gerona you can tour nearly everywhere in Catalonia and Spain by public transport and with your own car there are hundreds of places you can reach on a day trip.

Public transport around Gerona is good for busses and trains but the taxi company has the monopoly and is terrible and most unreliable. Of course Gerona has the best of shops but things like cinema and theatre are all in Catalan only.

Thank you for your insightful reply.  Are there any areas to avoid staying in in Girona that we should be aware of please? Many thanks, Angela

Yes there is an area of Gerona that I have been told to stay away from. I believe it is called Font de la Polvra. I have never met a native who has said they have been to that district. It is on a little hill behind the Gerona Cemetery. I think it is only a housing estate. But you will not find anyone who is willing to talk about the area. All I have ever got is to stay away.
