A great way to find out about public transport possibilities is to use Google Maps. It can provide multiple options for any journey, by car, public transport ('transit') & others, including timetables for public transport.

Start with Google Maps & search for your destination (Begur), & click the button marked Directions. Click the Train symbol (between the car and the walker) to tell it that you want the public transport option. Then enter the starting point, such as Madrid-Puerta de Atocha (Madrid's main station). It may instantly give you some possibilities or you may have to press Enter. In any case, the possibilities are based on 'Leaving Now', so you probably want to click Leave Now to opt for Depart After or Arrive By. You can then set a time & date. If you click on Options, there are some choices that can be made.

This link gives an example. (Click on a given route for further details)

Each possibility shown gives the expected timetable including total time. The timetables are generally accurate, but I always try to check them independently. In the case of the high-speed AVE, pricing varies train-by-train, but Google doesn't show this. The RENFE site shows pricing. If the traveller is over 60, it's well worthwhile buying a Tarjeta Dorada before booking for €6. This gives 12 months discount of up to 40% on almost all Spanish railway journeys. There are also other discount cards, and all the details are here. (It can be problematic to get the Tarjeta Dorada if the traveller isn't already in Spain, as they normally need to go to a station or travel agency with their ID. I don't think it's possible to book with the discount unless you know the number of the Tarjeta Dorada.)

Overall, Google isn't aware of every possibility, but is a very good place to start.
