I'm trying to get more info from Vodafone on the maximum time they would be OK with roaming in Spain with their unlimited data plan. They replied to my email with an automatic message telling me that they no longer reply to emails! You are supposed to telephone or use their 'chat' system. As this chat doesn't connect you to a person but is programmed to respond to a specific set of questions, it's useless.

Their terms & conditions specify that roaming is for 'temporary use, such as holidays & short breaks', which doesn't sound like stays of multiple months, but would probably be ok up to about a month at a time. I'd check with one of their UK sales offices before entering into any long-term contract (& try to get any promises in writing!)

As for watching TV, it would almost certainly be OK if you have a TV with a wifi connection or have a laptop that can connect to the TV using a compatible connection. What would be compatible depends on the TV. My old Sony TV has HDMI & VGA connectors so any laptop with either of these should work, though you would need an audio connection as well if you use VGA, which is a very old type.

I don't think you would get a free 4G modem with the streaming deals as it isn't mentioned in the sales blurb, but they're not very expensive. See https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=B08235ZNPV&ref=nb_sb_noss&tag=cstareg-21 I would also check with sales that the streaming services aren't disabled when roaming. In theory, VPNs can get round geographic restrictions but my experience over three years tells me not to rely on that theory.

We have a similar situation. We used Movistar until they jacked up their prices in 2019 so we cancelled them (that's a story in itself as they don't want to believe we cancelled). This year we rented a mifi from Spain Internet (https://www.spaininternet.net). It had an unlimited Spanish data SIM card, running 4G. It cost about £80 for three weeks. There was a fair usage clause limiting me to 300GB, which we never approached. It worked fairly well, allowing me to make Zoom calls, email, browsing etc. TV was OK too, via a Firestick, except for BBC iPlayer, for which I used ExpressVPN. I have to say the VPN was disappointing as it only uses about 4 servers in the UK and the BBC seem to be wise to all of them, so the signal kept getting blocked. Channel 4 etc seemed more stable.

I would suggest trying a data SIM card rental, either with their Huawei mifi or your own or phone hotspot. There are other suppliers but this seemed to be the cheapest with the most data. I picked up the device from my local Correos and returned it via a post box.

Can anybody suggest a better VPN for occasional use?

We use a router with  either my UK Vodafone SIM,   or roaming  GBs on  my French SFR SIM. They add up to 35 GBs per month.  We ran a bit short one month so bought a cheap ORANGE.ES SIM in Roses.
