Hi everyone

I have been in Spain for almost a year.  For most of it, I have been living near Denia whilst I search for a place to put down roots.

For various reason, i would prefer to be north of Barcelona but as I am on my own, and don't yet speak Spanish, I am worried that there will not be an English speaking community to engage with.  Can anyone recommend an area where it would be easier to integrate?  I am looking for somewhere not too far from coast, near somewhere with things to do.  I love yoga, (just finished training as a teacher) and interested in volunteering at animal rescue.  Also if there was a horse rescue, that would be ideal.  I am 61 and love the outdoors, hiking etc.

Just would love some pointers/ideas.  Am going to come up for a visit soon and it would be useful to have any input.

Begur is a place of interest but open to any opinions.  Thanks, Anna

Hi Anna,

I live in Begur, have been here about 16 years. My Spanish is minimal! There are lots of foreigners here if all different nationalities which makes life interesting. There is a riding stables and also a yoga centre.

If you want more expats, mostly English, Calonge seems to have a lot going on , more than Begur. It’s also near the coast.

I hope that helps!

Den

Hi Denise

Thank you for your feedback!  Really appreciate it as I don't know the area very well.  I just know that I think I would be more suited to a slightly cooler climate than Denia.  Really keen to visit and have a look around.  Are there any ex pat facebook groups that could be useful? Anna

Hi again,

Ok, in Calonge there's Calonge Amigos, a Facebook page. TBH I've no idea if there's a group in Begur. However, if you join the U3A COSTA BRAVO you'll not be short of things to do or people to meet. It includes people from all over the CB.

I forgot to mention that there is a dog/cat rescue centre in Palafrugell, I know they like volunteers.

Best wishes,

Denis

We have a home in Lloret de Mar (have lived here for about 6 years) and it along with the neighboring town of Blanes are both excellent places with great communities.

Since they're both on the water and tourist destinations there's a fairly high number of English speaking people in the local businesses so it's been great. When needed we use the conversation mode of Google Translate and have always been greeted with smiling faces when communicating this way with people.
