Our Broadband is quite efficient but expensive - €50 each month so €600 per year.

We only use if for 3 months max .

Any alternatives?

We're the same, it's such a waste of money.  We're waiting for 'fibra' in Sa Riera ...

Jill,

What sort of connection do you currently have? Is it by a cable which connects into your property or do you have a 4G 'modem' (usually white, possibly saying Huawei-B315 or similar on the back)? What sort of download speeds do you normally get? Does it also provide a 'fixed' (972 nnnnnn) telephone line?

I'm asking because it's possible to buy a SIM from Amazon in the UK which gives you a prepaid data connection where you get 24GB of data for about £40. You could buy a lot of these for €600! When we first moved to Spain, in late December 2016, I used one of these whilst I got myself sorted out. The service wasn't as good as I now have from Movistar & didn't provide a phone line but it was very much cheaper. (As a full-time resident, my requirements are quite different from those of someone here from time to time.)

If you can provide answers to the questions, I'll try to give you an honest appraisal of your options, given that I don't know anything about local Begur suppliers. (My qualifications for doing this are 55 years computer experience, including running a computer network with 2,500 users in Geneva & installing satellite internet & phone links in about 30 developing countries.)

As for the arrival of fibre-optic internet, that's unlikely to have a pay-as-you-go tariff unless there's a lot of competition, so they'll still expect you to pay for all 12 months of the year.

Thank you Satprof, your reply to Jill was very helpful.  Unfortunately, we have tenants so we can't do the SIM alternative, but good to know that fibre optic probably won't be available for short contracts.

Best wishes

Alison

Hi Jill - we have the same problem. We are paying Movistar every month - EUR80 (!!) and we are only using it for 2 months of the year.  This summer when we were there, the internet and phone line dropped dead and despite trying to call them, they were useless so we were without internet and phone line for our whole stay!  What we ended up doing was buying a new router and a SIM card from Amazon that we were able to load up with 50gb and that was fine for our stay.  My husband has researched quite a lot and has found that we can get a SIM card here in the UK with vodafone with limitless data, so for our next visit, we plan to take one of those and then we can relax.  It still works out a lot cheaper than Movistar and in my opinion the service/quality is much better! Best of luck...

Rebecca- How 'unlimited' is unlimited? I'm sure many people with tenants would be interested to know the details. Please post the details of this Vodafone deal, preferably including the 'URL' of the web page where more information is available.

Hi there

This is the deal my husband found:

https://www.vodafone.co.uk/unlimited-data-plans/?cid=ppc-UK_19_AO_P_X_J_I_D_CBU_BAU_Drive_Text-Brand_Google_SIMO_NA_Simo_Unlimited_Mix_Mix_NA_Exact&kpid=go_cmp-2021005199_adg-73307114284_ad-380705972119_kwd-784768480995_dev-c_ext-87267228880_prd-&vfadid=2021005199&gclid=Cj0KCQjwp4j6BRCRARIsAGq4yMHIT6oin282jjJ7nZ1k1BC6jZCT5YjcF34LY_6qUGiQsoQq_CV38U0aAqK0EALw_wcB

Thanks for the detail. The problem with this is that it's a monthly contract, not Pay-as-you-go, so you're going to have to pay, say, £20 monthly making £240 annually. That's still an improvement over Movistar, but you wouldn't be able to leave it here permanently. The mobile operators are allowed to charge more and/or cut service levels if they deem that you're not genuinely roaming. This means it's best to take the Sim (or Sim + box)  back to the UK at the end of the season and use it there. (It's a good deal for UK use anyway.) I have no idea how long Vodafone would let you keep it out here for before they deemed you using roaming 'unreasonably', but I'll e-mail them & ask the question. Clearly, I'll post their answer back here.

We currently don’t have broadband in our apartment as we are only there a couple of weeks 3 or 4 times a year.we do plan to retire soon and spend more time there and have been looking at options . With the coda phone sim I can understand you can get unlimited data on a phone or tablet, if you go for the option with Prime etc do this package include the box referred to above ?

Could we what these on the TV in Spain?
